On Father’s Day – The Serious Side

On Father’s Day

I read a fact the other day that surprised me; it stated that Father’s Day wasn’t a holiday until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed a bill introducing it into our American Hallmark world. June and necktie sales haven’t been quite the same since then.

Mother’s Day, on the other hand has been around since the 1920’s I believe. This isn’t surprising, Continue reading

Inspired by inspiration

This weekend we did one of those movie marathons which we haven’t done in awhile and I have to say, we must do again soon. The secret to a perfect movie marathon is to make sure you’ve got adult beverages on hand, there are no kids around, Continue reading

I’ve lost my mind (again)

Today I took a big step in regaining control of my mind. There was a period in my life when I had full control of it at all times, except that brief period during the ‘70s (when it was self-inflicted) and then the long blur after babies three and four that ended up lasting about five years. But other than that, I’ve always felt that I had pretty good control over my mind – until recently, that is.

Somewhere between 1990 after the birth of my third child and celebrating my 48th birthday this year, I lost the ability to control the “crazy voice in my head.” Continue reading

The Rebel Chick Creed – (on the serious side)

I know “Life’s a Laugh,” but sometimes I’ve got an idea that’s just not that funny, but it still might bring a smile to your face.  It’s the kind of idea that I can’t help but share (because I can) – so I will … This one’s for you ladies.

Prelude to “A Rebel Chick Creed”

I am a Rebel Chick.  I didn’t realize this, however, until I turned 39 which was nine short years ago.  Although it feels more like just two or three years, somehow 3,287 days have passed me by.  Up to that point, I had been known as a daughter, sister, wife, friend, girlfriend, mother, stepmother, granddaughter, girl, gal, momma, woman, (for a short time “fox”) babe, and chick – to mention a few.  I could continue on with the list but then I’d be more inclined to go off subject and tell the tales related to why my late husband occasionally referred to me as his “wench,” for example.   It wasn’t until I joined a group of friends in a monthly rendezvous ritual at 39 that I recognized my true identity.

As most groups go, we quickly realized our need for a name, Continue reading

Six hour trip turns into 2.5 days

One day last week we jumped in the car and headed north for a short “day trip.” We intended to leave around 10am and be back around 6pm.  This did not happen.  Our departure ended up being delayed because of my headache – I was moving a bit slow that morning, I’m not going to lie; and then while I was getting ready I decided it would be fun to have “The Best of Kris Allen” American Idol tunes on the iPod to listen to on the trip.  All in all, my sloth-like pace and my Kris Allen crush caused about a 45 minute delay and then we needed gas, and then we forgot the radar detector, and then I wanted my pillow, and then we needed snacks … You get the picture.  By the time we finally got on the freeway and pointed the car Continue reading

Who are the better listeners – men or women?

Hey you – yeah, you!  I’m talking to you! What’s up with men and women who can’t hear each other when they talk?  Last year I read the findings of a study that summarized:  As men age they lose the ability to hear sounds at higher tones, and as women age they lose the ability to hear sounds at lower tones.  And By “sounds” I can only assume the study was referring to Continue reading

Do Men or Women Hang On To Relationships Longer?

Hopelessly Devoted to Whom?

Why is it that people have trouble letting go in a relationship?  And by people I mean men and women, of course.  Some would argue that men tend to hang on longer than women do, only because going through the trouble of trying to break in a “new one” would be so much work!  Others would argue that women are the ones who dig in their heels, fingers, arms, legs, elbows, ovaries, and whatever Continue reading

How To Be a Good Wedding Guest

Spring is in the air and wedding season is just around the corner.  How do I know this?  Because we’re coming up on my daughter’s third wedding anniversary.  In fact, two of my girls strolled down the aisle over the last three years – well, one of them almost ran, but then again she was a sprinter on the track team in high school, so it’s understandable.

Daughter #1 had a lovely April ceremony in an outdoor setting.  The birds were chirping and butterflies were flitting about.  (This is real.)  It was just warm enough to cause that nice sweat ring under your pits – the kind that makes you feel like a man-woman just when you least want, or need to anyway.  Ironically Continue reading

Boys are Dumb – Girls are … (Not Dumber)

When you’re a girl you can always count on one thing — giving other people advice.  I don’t know why, but it appears that people seem to go to guys for advice less often than they go to girls.  Why is that?  I’ve given it some thought and come up with the following possibilities.  There is a common understanding that either a) guys don’t know anything, b) guys don’t give a crap if you have a problem so probably won’t listen, c) guys only pretend to listen if you’ll have a drink with them, or d) guys have figured out that if they stop to listen to everyone else’s problems they won’t have time to solve their own.

I have to admit, in my 20’s I would have thought Continue reading
